I have put this little guide together to help you get an idea on how to plan your proposal if you are considering doing this in Melbourne. I hope you will find this helpful!
PROPOSAL AND COUPLE
SESSION
A proposal is a heartfelt gesture where one person asks their partner to marry them. It signifies the beginning of the engagement period leading up to the wedding. Proposals can range from grand public displays to intimate private moments, but they all share the common goal of expressing love and commitment.
VENDORS
WHO WILL MAKE YOUR PROPOSAL INCREDIBLE
Over the years, I have been lucky enough to meet a lot of people working on the events and wedding industry. I have worked with many companies and I have learned a few things along the way. Here is a list of the vendors I would recommend if you are considering anyone to help you set up and bring to life your plans for the proposal. This is not a paid list - I have chosen these vendors because I have seen their work and I believe they share my standars and values.
PLANNING AND LOGISTICS
When planning a proposal, consider the following logistics
Personal Anecdote: Ben and Stacey's Proposal
One of my favorite proposal stories is from Ben and Stacey. Ben planned a session and told Stacey they were heading to a dinner at Cape Schanck but made a stop at Gunnamatta Beach for a photo session. Stacey was surprised but happy. We started the session, and about 45 minutes in, near some rocks, I asked them to stand back-to-back and look ahead. As they stepped forward, Ben got down on one knee. Stacey, initially unsure of what was happening, turned around and realized Ben was proposing. She later confessed she had lost hope that anything exciting was going to happen because she got distracted during our session. It was a very emotional and perfect proposal!
Make sure to bring your jewelry, your veil and your shoes to your bridal portrait session!
When planning a proposal, consider the following logistics:
Location: Choose a meaningful and picturesque location.
Timing: Plan for a time when your partner is least expecting it, and consider the lighting for photography.
Photography: Decide whether you want the moment captured secretly or with your partner aware.
Ring: Ensure the ring is ready and securely hidden.
Speech: Prepare what you want to say. Keep it heartfelt and genuine.
PROPOSALS
COMMON CHALLENGES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
Weather: Always have a wet weather plan. Check the forecast and be prepared to reschedule or have an indoor backup location.
Seasonal Popularity: Some locations are popular during certain seasons or weekends. Research your chosen spot to avoid crowds.
Outfit Surprises: If your partner is unaware of the proposal, they might change into a casual outfit. Plan the timing and setting to ensure they dress appropriately.
Wedding Proposal Scenarios
1. Surprise Proposal
Scenario: Your partner doesn’t know the photographer is there.
How it Works: I hide in a discreet location and capture the moment without your partner knowing.
Step-by-Step:
Choose a location and time when it won’t be crowded.
Arrange a casual outing.
When the moment feels right, get down on one knee. I’ll be there to capture the moment secretly.
Props and Accessories: Keep it simple to allow flexibility. If desired, a champagne spray and a flower bouquet are great additions.
Possible Challenges: Someone might block the view at the moment of your proposal, or the angle might not be appropriate for great photos
2. Awareness Session
Scenario: Your partner is aware of the photography session.
How it Works: Tell your partner that a relative gifted you a photography session for an anniversary or special occasion. We go through the session normally, and you propose near the end.
Step-by-Step:
Inform your partner about the session gift.
Act naturally during the session.
Near the end, I’ll guide you to a picturesque spot where you propose.
Props and Accessories: A simple bouquet or a special accessory to reveal after the proposal can add a nice touch.
3. Bump-Into Proposal
Scenario: You bump into me and ask for a photo.
How it Works: You “bump into” me at the location and ask me to take a picture of you both with your phone. During the setup, you propose.
Step-by-Step:
Plan the location and timing.
When you see me, ask for a photo.
As I’m setting up the shot, you propose.
Props and Accessories: Use your phone for the initial photo, then switch to professional shots post-proposal.

Personal Proposal Story
During a proposal shoot for Mike and Ana from Singapore, Mike faced the challenge of hiding flowers as they were traveling and Ana would find out sometthing was up if she found the flowers. We arranged for me to pick up the flowers from the shop on my way to the session and hid them until the right moment. I captured the proposal from a distance, then handed Ana the flowers and introduced myself, creating a seamless and memorable experience.
